🤖 Parent Coach Chat
Use AI-powered coaching to practice teaching techniques, test your knowledge, and work through challenging moments.
Overview
The Parent Coach Chat is your personal AI teaching assistant. It draws from your reading progress, book notes, and teaching philosophy to provide personalized guidance. Choose from four specialized modes to match your current needs.
Access Parent Coach Chat from the Teacher Portal by clicking "Coach Chat" in the main navigation.
Chat Modes
Each mode tailors the AI's responses to a specific type of support. You can switch modes at any time during a conversation.
💬 Discussion Mode
Best for: General conversations about teaching, exploring ideas from your reading, and discussing how to apply concepts.
In Discussion mode, the coach acts as a thoughtful mentor who:
- Asks clarifying questions to understand your situation
- References concepts from books you've read
- Helps you think through teaching decisions
- Suggests practical applications for your family
Example prompts:
- "How can I apply Charlotte Mason's ideas about nature study with Lucas?"
- "What did Hold On to Your Kids say about peer orientation?"
- "I'm struggling with morning routines - any suggestions?"
❤️ Process Mode
Best for: Working through difficult emotions, frustration, or challenging moments in your homeschool day.
In Process mode, the coach provides emotional support by:
- Listening without judgment
- Asking reflective questions to help you understand your feelings
- Validating your experiences as normal
- Gently offering reframes when helpful
- Focusing on your wellbeing, not just problem-solving
Example prompts:
- "I lost my temper during math today and I feel terrible"
- "Dylan refuses to do anything I ask and I'm at my wit's end"
- "I'm doubting whether homeschooling is the right choice"
Process mode won't rush to give advice. It prioritizes helping you feel heard and understood first.
📝 Quiz Mode
Best for: Testing your understanding of books you've read and reinforcing key concepts.
In Quiz mode, the coach tests your knowledge by:
- Asking questions about concepts from completed books
- Evaluating your answers (correct, partially correct, or needs review)
- Providing explanations and page references
- Tracking your performance across sessions
Quiz Stats
Your quiz performance is tracked automatically:
- Questions Asked - Total questions in this session
- Correct Answers - How many you got right
- Concepts Tested - Which topics have been covered
Example prompts:
- "Quiz me on the last book I finished"
- "Ask me about Charlotte Mason's principles"
- "Test my understanding of growth mindset"
🎭 Role-Play Mode
Best for: Practicing difficult conversations, rehearsing responses, and building confidence for challenging situations.
In Role-Play mode, the coach:
- Plays the role of a child or situation you describe
- Responds realistically to your parenting/teaching approach
- Stays in character until you pause for feedback
- Provides coaching when you click "Pause & Get Feedback"
Using Pause & Get Feedback
The "Pause & Get Feedback" button is your secret weapon in Role-Play mode:
- Click the button when you want coaching advice
- The AI breaks character and becomes your coach
- Get specific feedback on what you said and how it landed
- Learn alternative approaches you could try
- Resume the scenario or start a new one
Example scenarios to practice:
- "Play Lucas having a meltdown because his math is too hard"
- "Be Dylan refusing to share with Maxi"
- "Act like Lucas when he's avoiding starting his work"
Don't worry about getting it "right" in role-play. The goal is to practice and learn, not perform perfectly.
Switching Modes
You can change modes at any time during a conversation:
- Look for the Mode Selector at the top of the chat
- Click the mode you want to switch to
- The AI will acknowledge the mode change and adjust its approach
Switching modes is useful when:
- A discussion naturally leads to wanting to practice (Discussion → Role-Play)
- You need emotional support before problem-solving (Discussion → Process)
- You want to test your understanding after learning (Discussion → Quiz)
Context Awareness
The Parent Coach Chat is aware of your:
| Context | How It's Used |
|---|---|
| Children | Names, ages, grade levels - the coach knows your family |
| Reading Progress | Which books you've completed and are currently reading |
| Book Notes | Key insights you've saved from your reading |
| Teaching Philosophy | Your evolving beliefs about education and parenting |
This means the coach can reference specific concepts from books you've actually read and apply them to your specific children.
Best Practices
- Be specific - Include child names, ages, and details about situations
- Use the right mode - Match the mode to your current need
- Don't rush - Especially in Process mode, take time to reflect
- Practice regularly - Role-play builds confidence over time
- Review your notes - The coach can help you revisit and apply insights
